Dates and Times

As those who have visited Africa know, travel in these countries is never a set itinerary and a herd of elephants, a road block (legal or other), a long queue at the border, bad roads/weather or a fantastic campsite may delay all good plans.

We are hoping that other adventurers may want to join us along the way, either by meeting up with us on our intended route, or flying into Lusaka, Dar es Salaam or Kigali and renting a 4x4 safari-kitted vehicle.  This would be so amazing.

We have laid out our high-level itinerary below and not wanting to be too prescriptive, it is a bit sketchy. It may be that we have to leave out a park or stay longer in some places, but the general idea is to set at least 2 dates where we can meet up. SA passport holders do not have to get visas.

1. Week in Zanzibar, Tanzania  - 15 - 21 February 2024

  • Fly directly into Zanzibar via Nairobi from Johannesburg on Kenyan Airways

  • 3 nights in Stone Town (Bnb type accommodation)

  • Visit the local sights including Old Fort, Old Dispensary, Palace Museum, St. Joseph's Cathedral. Slave Market, Spice workshop, Forodhani gardens and of course, curio markets

  • 3 nights at Paje beach (Bnb type accommodation)

  • Visit the local sights including forests for monkeys, seaweed centre, islands, etc

  • Use all local transport so no car is required.

  • Fly out of Dar after another possible night there. (depends on ferry times and flights)

2. 4 day fly in Gorilla Trek in Rwanda  - 29 February 2024

  • Fly into Kigali, spend two nights in local hotel

  • Take in the local sights including coffee tasting, Kigali Genocide Memorial Ground, Kimironko local market, museums and Nyamirambo food market for local nightlife

  • Hire a car to drive to Volcanoes National Park for two nights in a guesthouse (103km)

  • Gorilla Trekking ($500 for SADC passports)

  • Return to Kigali and another possible night depending on flights.

3. Rwandan Gorilla and Safari tour

  • Hire a 4x4 kitted safari vehicle which you would use for the Gorillas as above (camping in guest house garden)

  • Travel with us in Rwanda for as long as you can, bearing in mind that its a very small country and getting back to Kigali in the centre is never very far away.
